Favorite Zappa Albums: Pop Culture Graveyard Ep 67 | Frank Zappa, The Mothers of Invention
Favorite Zappa Albums! This was one of my toughest videos; not just because Frank Zappa created so much great music that it was hard to pick my ten favorite albums, but because I chose to rank them! That's right, I'm bringing you a countdown of my Ten Favorite Zappa Albums. Please let me know in the comments what your favorite Zappa albums are. And whether you're a longtime Zappa fan who is having trouble picking a favorite Frank LP, or a new listener just dipping your toe in the water of Zappa's catalog, I hope you find my list a useful resource. Enjoy!

Here's a bit of a sampler for you, featuring one track off each album...
Here's Deseri off Cruising With Ruben and the Jets, which gives you a good idea of this album's infectious doo-wop charm. Check out those backing vocals!:

Here is a link to the same pressing I own of Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, on Zappa Records--featuring the original 1968 mix. Accept no substitutes!

Here's Chunga's Revenge off of...you guessed it, Chunga's Revenge. This song is the intersection of so many different musical genres I think it should have wide appeal:

Enjoy the sleepy majesty of Watermelon in Easter Hay off of Joe's Garage:

Here is Black Napkins, an outrageously brilliant track off Zoot Allures, with some face-melting Zappa guitar work:
https://youtu.be/cNkl1avYXRM
Enjoy the outta-sight space funk of Cosmik Debris off of Apostrophe:
https://youtu.be/wtx4ZJ1cwI0
Okay, here's TWO off of Over-Nite Sensation, because I can't stop myself. First off, here is my beloved Camarillo Brillo:
https://youtu.be/mNJQFbkOjkg
And here's Fifty-Fifty, featuring some outrageous George Duke synth-work:
https://youtu.be/25ThICK0Fbw
Here is a hard left turn for you! Check out the track Mom and Dad off the Mothers' album We're Only In It For The Money:
https://youtu.be/SxANIZiIcsg
If you're ever wondering why Frank Zappa is so well respected as a modern composer, just listen to Son of Mr Green Genes off of Hot Rats:
https://youtu.be/_YNK4m_kN-8
My favorite track off of Freak Out, You Didn't Try to Call Me is a song Frank would rerecord several times, as well as repeatedly revamp live by radically altering the arrangement several times over the years:
https://youtu.be/xllgFDsMu4A
Enjoy 12 minutes of bliss off the live double-album Roxy & Elsewhere: a transcendant rendition of Son of Orange County that blends into More Trouble Every Day:

Frank Zappa: The Roxy Performances. This is the 7-disc set I bought so I could have every single damn thing that happened at the Roxy. It's actually at a lower price now than when I bought it, and I highly recommend it!

If Roxy & Elsewhere gets you primed for some more great Zappa live stuff--check out Frank Zappa: Live in New York. Here is the Triple Album I talk about at the end of the episode. This is such a great companion piece to the Roxy & Elsewhere live set. And you'll be happy to know the vinyl is WAY cheaper than the CDs!:
