BEASTIE BOYS: Their Most Under-Appreciated LP! Pop Culture Graveyard, Ep. 1

CLICK "SHOW MORE" BELOW for more Beastie Boys content! What's your favorite Beasties album? Paul's Boutique? Hello Nasty? Let me know in the comments!

Beastie Boys: Hello Nasty – In my opinion, the Beasties’ most under-appreciated album. Another genre-busting success, this set of remastered vinyl sounds fantastic, providing the proper sonic playground for DJ Mix Master Mike to showcase his skills. My favorite deep cut? Was gonna say Song For The Man, but let's go really deep: Dr. Lee PhD, featuring "Money" Mark Nishita on keyboards and legend Lee "Scratch" Perry on wonderfully unique vocals.

Beastie Boys: Cookie Puss - The Beasties' Some Old Bullshit compilation is currently the easiest place to get the Cookie Puss EP without spending crazy money for the original vinyl. As I say in the video, I'm a big fan of the infectious reggae-spoof Beastie Revolution. You have to really love a genre to capture it so effortlessly. https://amzn.to/2VmzwfU

Beastie Boys: Licensed to Ill - The album that started it all for Beastie Boys (creatively) and for Russell Simmons (financially). Standout tracks like Rhymin & Stealin, The New Style and She's Crafty retain their charm 30+ years later, and the one-two punch of Brass Monkey and Slow And Low still packs a wallop. My favorite deep cut: Hold It Now, Hit It; the upbeat funky vibe of which gives a hint of where the Beasties are headed on their next record. https://amzn.to/3buwVXe

Beastie Boys: Paul’s Boutique – Considered Beastie Boys masterpiece, this two-disc 180-gram vinyl edition is the proper way to hear it. My favorite deep cut (cheating, the whole album is a deep cut) is a suite made up of many tracks: B-Boy Bouillabaisse. https://amzn.to/2VownMA

Beastie Boys: Check Your Head – The Beasties re-establish their celebrity by picking their instruments back up and creating the blueprint for their next twenty years. Sabotage, Gratitude and Time For Livin' still sound as immediate as ever. If you own only one Beastie Boys album, this should be it. My favorite deep cut: Live At PJ’s. https://amzn.to/3eHrCFV

Beastie Boys: Ill Communication – The Beasties most accessible album provides hit after hit in different genres, and shows a studio polish they never had before. This remastered version even has bonus tracks. My favorite deep cut: Sabrosa. https://amzn.to/2yqaV11

Beastie Boys: The Sounds of Science - The best Beasties compilation so far, containing tracks spanning all their work from their early hardcore days through Hello Nasty. All newjack Beastie fans should begin here. My favorite deep cut(s)? It's a tie: Netty’s Girl & Boomin’ Granny, perhaps the two funniest Beastie songs, which is really saying something. https://amzn.to/34S0CyY

Beastie Boys Book – This is an excellent biography that I cannot recommend highly enough. The true star of the book is Adam Yauch, who shines in countless stories about his creativity, good humor and moral compass. My favorite story in the book is either the one about how Beastie Boys wound up on the Madonna tour or the one detailing the indifferent attitude of Capitol Records' president directly after the (mis)handled release of Paul’s Boutique. https://amzn.to/3cvlJJO

Pass the Mic: Beastie Boys 1991-1996 – Great book with killer photography that catches the Beasties on tour throughout their golden era. Cameraman Ari Marcopoulos showcases the boys in the studio and on the stage, usually in mid-air! https://amzn.to/2Vo6Ymh

Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years – This book has an outrageous amount of great photos and anecdotes chronicling the early years of hip hop. This book not only has shots of very early Beastie Boys moments, but it puts them in context. We see the Beasties on the bus of the Raising Hell tour with Run-DMC, clowning with Rick Rubin, guesting on the Joe Franklin Show, and posing with their legendary hip-hop peers. My favorite pages document the recording of License to Ill and the Beasties' sour exit from Def Jam. https://amzn.to/2KlGg7K

Rockin’ Steady: A Guide to Basketball and Cool – Name checked by Ad Rock in the song “Pass the Mic,” this fun and fascinating book by New York Knicks legend Walt “Clyde” Frazier does not disappoint. I highly recommend this rerelease of the hard-to-find 1974 book that includes everything from scouting reports on Pistol Pete Maravich to Clyde’s “grooming secrets.” https://amzn.to/2VEngGG

Beastie Boys Video Anthology – If you’re looking for a bitchin’ Beastie video collection, this is it. Spike Jonze, Nathaniel "Yauch" Hornblower, Ari Marcopoulos and others direct these entrancing video oddities from the Beastie's early hardcore and Paul's Boutique eras right up through Hello Nasty. It even contains a hysterical deep cut that first appeared on the Skills To Pay The Bills VHS, Netty's Girl directed by Tamra Davis. Packed with extras, this is a Beasties Fan must have. https://amzn.to/2RRWYzs
