GETTING TOO THIN ON LOW CARB? Manage your Weightloss the Healthy Way
Are you worried about losing too much weight on a low carbohydrate or ketogenic diet? This video gives you some things to consider.
If you are on any kind of low-carb eating plan (Keto, Atkins, Carnivore, Paleo or any other similar regime) losing weight is very likely to have been one of your motivations even though the main motivation should just be way better health outcomes. But it might be that you are happy with the weight you have, or you have already lost more than you expected or wanted to? In that case, you need to ask yourself a few questions before you decide what to do about it:
Are you really "too thin"? Too thin for what? Are other people telling you this? Remember that in the west now, around 55% of adults are rechnically obese, and suffering from either pre-diabetes or Type2 Diabetes - so overweight is considered "normal"! Don't be fooled by that - rather be healthy!
If you think you are too thin to be healthy, there are three possibilities:
1) Are you sick? If you have a medical condition, like an infection, you need to get medical attention to address the cause of the weightloss
2) Are you healthy, but hungry? You probably need to eat more fat. When we cut sugar (carbs) we need to give our bodies an alternative energy supply, in the form of fat. If we cut sugar but do not increase our fat intake, our bodies will break down our tissues (often muscle) to access protein for energy, and we will lose weight. We will also feel hungry, as the hunger and satiety (feeling full) hormones are regulated by our available fat reserves.
3) Are you not really hungry, but just physically weak? Then you need to build muscle, and this will be achieved by exercise. Muscles shrink with age ("sarcopenia") if we do not continue to exercise them, so maintaining healthy weight requires consistent resistance exercise, like bodyweight resistance exercises, or weight lifting, to keep the muscles toned and strong.
Sure you could "fatten yourself up again" by eating badly, but that will just lead to dangerous health outcomes and is not worth it!
