The Fender Vintera II ’70s Stratocaster recalls the decade when Strat masters defined so many musical styles—from Stevie Ray Vaughan’s hypersonic blues, to Mark Knopfler’s out-of-phase-pickup-driven pop, Eric Clapton’s Slowhand-era hits, David Gilmour’s soaring “Black Strat” solos, Robin Trower’s funky hard rock, Rory Gallagher’s fiery aggression and Eric Johnson’s jaw-dropping “Cliffs of Dover” instrumental. Stratocasters in the 1970s exhibit perhaps the model’s biggest departures from vintage specs, owing mostly to Fender’s sale to CBS in 1965. The headstock became oversized, the neck profile got chunkier, players could purchase HSS (humbucker, single-coil, single-coil) pickup configurations and other such alterations from ’50s and ’60s models.

“The classic surf green finish of the Vintera II ’70s Stratocaster is really beautiful—especially as it’s paired with a rosewood fingerboard,” says guitarist, songwriter and musical director Kelly Rosenthal (Camila Cabello, Lizzy McAlpine, I Am Strikes). “It’s a guitar I want to look at, as well as play. It may sound a little clichéd, but it’s cool to have an aesthetically pleasing instrument. When I like the way my guitars look, I want to have them out and play them more—instead of sitting in their cases.”
