Male otter scent marking a patch of grass in Fetlar, Shetland in 2010. We were going to book a guide, but he failed to answer our e-mails. In the end we discovered that otters are really easy to see so we saved ourselves £80 a head by finding the otters ourselves. A while before we saw this otter we saw the guide with two people - presumably paying customers. We saw this - and they didn't!

Save yourself a lot of money - don't book a guide. Just walk around the coast in the Northern islands of Shetland - they are so easy to see with a bit of patience. We saw about 4 or 5 in two weeks (it's hard to know when you are seeing the same one a second time).
