Ой ми були у великому лісі
Ukrainian trad, arr. Imre Ploeg / Maryana Golovchenko
This song is from the region Polissia, in the north of Ukraine. The text is about a ritual that normally takes place during the Green Festivities at the end of May – beginning of June, and is called “Vodinnia Kusta” (literally translated: leading a Bush). The ritual stems from the pagan tradition.
The first day of festivities, a girl (the Bush) is selected to be decorated with green maple leaves. The second day, a group of girls leads the Bush through the village. They walk from door to door singing "bush songs" and wishing good things, mainly a good harvest, to the hosts. These "bush songs" often are a glorification of the Bush.
JIP Chamber Choir is a project choir from Utrecht, the Netherlands, founded in 2013 by brothers Jonathan and Imre Ploeg. JIP wants to present new and unknown choir music from all over the world, brought together in surprising, engaging and fundamental themes like war and peace, the nomadic life, the refugee crisis and the ecological crisis.
