Tinkering, Engineering and Making in the Library

STEM Education Consultant, Diana Wehrell-Grabowski, PhD provides video footage of a recent STEM and MakerEd workshop she conducted for families at Cocoa Beach Public Library. The workshop was offered in conjunction with Earth Day to bring awareness to upcycling broken and obsolete toys and gadgets. Through engaging discussion and PowerPoint presentation participants were introduced to the importance of providing tinkering experiences for their children, upcycling and recycling, reverse engineering, engineering design process, and green engineering. Parents guided their children as they deconstructed the gadgets, children took notes as they deconstructed. If time permitted families were encouraged to recreate a new gadget or form of art or jewelry from the external and internal components of their gadget. Participants were given a manual with background information on the Maker Movement and STEM Education, as well as inquiry-based procedures for deconstructing a gadget, and literature resources for children and tinkering resources for parents.
