Fireworks for Cunard's Queens: A Royal Rendezvous in Long Beach, California

We were onboard Cunard's newest ship, the Queen Elizabeth on March 12, 2013 when she cruised to the Queen Mary, docked in Long Beach, for a Royal Rendezvous.

In the festive ceremony, bands played, horns blared, and fireworks illuminated the sea and sky.

It was in 1967 that the sister ships and legendary transatlantic liners, the Queen Mary and the original Queen Elizabeth, met for the last time. After ceremonious farewell salutes, the Queen Mary embarked on her last voyage. She traveled 14,500 miles from Southampton to Long Beach, California, where she became a tourist attraction, floating hotel and special event venue.

The original Queen Elizabeth was purchased by a Chinese businessman and was about to serve as a floating university when she mysteriously caught fire and sank in Hong Kong harbor.
