Dr: so what memory what would you like to reckon today?
- I wanna work on a memory of ex-girlfriend. When i was 18, when we split up, I was really upset, really upset. It wass the first time being in a very intense relationship when I was 18. Lovely girl...when we split up, I was really upset for a long time, and it took me about 2 years.
(00:48)Dr: How distressing would that memory be to you?
(00:58) introduction of Session, before the desensitization phase
Dr: We'll start processing now .. I'll tune you into what to start with.... and then as we do a set of eye movements or might do taps or might do tones, just notice what comes up for you. Just be curious and just notice and sometimes things will change or they may not..You may notice other images, other thoughts, other feelings, other body sensations, other memories may come up and other times you may not be aware of anything but just the eye movements or the taps or tones. There’s no right and wrong response and try not to judge by something should or should not be happening, just notice whatever comes up and report back to me after I stop.
(1:36) The desensitization phase
Dr: I’d like you to bring out that image and those negative words... Just notice in your body where you feel light.
Several minutes later
Dr: what’s your distress rating for that out of ten? When you think about that now? 10 is the highest level of distress and 0 is the lowest
- 0 or 1 (distress of memory reduced to 0 or 1 out of 10)
Dr: ok could I get you to close your eyes and just focus on that memory again and just place yourself in that memory
(EMDR continues) Several minutes later
(2:52) Dr: ok what did you notice?
- There’s memories again, but it feels okay (EMDR continues)
3:06 (although eye movements are most commonly used in EMDR a variety of other stimuli including hand-tapping and auditory stimulation are often used to help process memories.)
Dr: relax, let's try some tapping. It's a different way of doing it and some other stuff can come up from doing this and often you could get more images. So I'm going to get you to put your hands on your knees ...like that and if you could close your eyes …. and I want you to go to that point, the last thing you know is that it's OK to love someone. Just notice that and I'm just going to start tapping. (tapping continues)
(4:41) Dr: ok so you can visualize that memory again and we are processing to get that memory. Do you want eye movements or tapping? - tapping (tapping continues)
Dr: what’s distress rating when you think about that memory now?
- 0 (distress of memory is now reduced to 0/10 before the instilling of a more adaptive belief)
(5:20) Dr: So if you think about the original incident now, how true to the words “I am strong” feels to you 7. 7 is could nearly true - I am pretty strong
Dr: yup, yup, so 7?
5:38 (The psychologist will then begin to install a more adaptive belief in relation to the memory) - 6
Dr: ok hold those words together when you think about it. Think about the incident and the words “I am strong”
(EDMR continues while installing new belief)
Dr: what did you notice?
- More relief
Dr: yeah? just notice that. (EDMR continues) ok - how that’s 7?
- 10 (EDMR continues)
Dr: And in relationship to the actual thing we’re working on, how do you feel about that now?
- good!
EMDR Session concludes:
-emotional & psychological distress of memory removed
- adaptive belief installed in relation to memory
