331 | TREKKING VOLCAN VILLARRICA 2847m!! - Pucon Chile (Patagonia Travel VLOG)

12 November 2019 - Day 82 - Volcan Villarrica | 331

Today we hike up Chile’s most active volcano - Volcan Villarrica! Standing at 2847m, this volcano had its last eruption only in 2015 and an amber alert in September just 2 months ago! It is Pucon’s most popular hike and tourist attraction! 🌋

A early wake up call at 6am, we gear up and head to the base to start our hike at 7:30am. A generally very steep hike, we traverse through some sections steeper than 45 degrees, feeling the legs burn as we ascended up to the summit. Halfway through we put on our crampons for the snowy section. Last time I had these on was in Mexico climbing its highest point - Pico de Orizaba at 5850m!! 🇲🇽 With cloudless skies and virtually minimal wind, it was perfect conditions for today’s hike which made it so much more enjoyable. 🙌🏽❄️

We reach the summit just after midday, ascending 1.6km vertical over 5 hours and what a sight it was! Thick smoke fuming from inside the crater we even needed to wear gas masks! This volcano is one of the only volcanos in the world you can hike up to the peak of an open crater and see lava! 🔥😷 These as the moments you live for!

Just when you thought the day was over after dinner, we stumble upon a late night protest surrounding a big fire in the middle street. All of a sudden, I see a whirling trail of smoke whiz pass my head, missing me by just a few cm’s. Pacos had just arrived to break it up. Couldn’t believe how close that gas canister came to my head - it’s the size of a coke can!! Safe to say it was probably a good time to head home and call it a day!! 🤕🤕
