Canada C3 Hangout #20: A Tale of Two Arctic Bears: Their Study and Ecology

Mark Edwards is a Research Scientist and the Curator of Mammalogy at the Royal Alberta Museum, in Edmonton, Alta. His research focuses on the ecology of individuals and populations with the goal of understanding processes influencing their spatial and temporal distribution, resource use, behaviours and interactions. His approach is to combine field-based studies (e.g., telemetry, mammal capture and monitoring, etc.) with laboratory (e.g. stable isotope analysis, museum collections, etc.) and computer-based modeling and analysis (e.g., GIS, remote sensing, etc.). His research is terrestrial-based with an emphasis on large mammals inhabiting the natural and urban regions of Arctic and Nearctic landscapes.

Canada C3 is a signature project for Canada’s 150th Anniversary of Confederation in 2017. The centrepiece is an epic 150-day sailing journey from Toronto to Victoria via the Northwest Passage that will connect Canadians from coast to coast to coast and inspire a deeper understanding of our land, our peoples and the past, present and future of our country. The expedition is divided into 15 legs and will have a cross-section of Canadian society on board, including scientists, artists, Indigenous Elders, historians, community leaders, youth, journalists and educators. These diverse and accomplished Canadians will connect with communities, conduct research, create art and music and together celebrate Canada.
