CHARLES STROUSE "Tomorrow" Hannah Paige & Friends of Matthew John

My sister Hannah grew up watching our orchestra, and she's been waiting for a chance to sing with us ever since. She loves to sing along with her favorite songs in the car, in the shower, and (when appropriate) at concerts. And she's constantly singing made up songs to her dolls. Yet I was so surprised with her being able to back the songs up with emotion.

She never had voice lessons, and I was concerned about whether she could control her nerves on stage. But I'll always remember our conversation about this concert: "I know you think I'm not ready to sing on stage," Hannah tells me, "but what you think doesn't matter. I'm not singing for you. I'm singing for God."

The music of Charles Strouse has touched the life of almost every American in the last half century. There may be no other living composer from America's songbook whose work is as integrated into the popular culture as that of Charles Strouse.

In 1977, Strouse teamed with lyricist Martin Charnin and librettist Thomas Meehan on the Broadway musical Annie. Running for 2,377 performances and yielding countless productions around the world, Strouse's score included "Tomorrow," "It's the Hard--Knock Life," "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile," and "I Don't Need Anything But You." The Broadway phenomenon earned Strouse his third Tony Award.
