Our artist on 16th of August was Smt. Sanghamitra Chakrabarty, from Delhi. She is an established vocalist in her field and marked her place with pride.
Details on her:
"Music is the language of the heart..." which was imbibed by her mother, Smt. Sumita Devi, who had herself undergone training of Indian Music from the Masters of Benaras Gharana. Sanghamitra started learning singing under her mother since the age of five. At the age of fourteen, she was accepted as a “GANDA-BANDHA (a sacred ceremony between a teacher and a pupil”)student by Md. Yunus Ali Khan, who was a student of Late Ustad Munawwar Ali Khan and the son of Late Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of Patiala Gharana. It was during this period, Sanghamitra has passed the “SANGEET VISHARAD” under the Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh and also ”SANGEET PROBOR” under the Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, Kolkata, where she got the first position and received a gold medal for her performance in music. She was in love with the style and songs of Patiala Gharana. At the age of nineteen, she sought blessings of Late Vidhushi Meera Banerjee, who was also named as “Meerabai of Bengal” and was a senior disciple of Late Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. It was here, where Sanghamitra was nurtured, cultivated in an appropriate way of the intricacies and style of Patiala Gharana.
She qualified the All India Radio audition at the age of nineteen
under General Category in subject Khayal. Public performances
went on and she was a sincere student to her “GURUMA”, Smt.
Meera Banerjee. Deep bondage of the Guru and Shishya was
only her weapon in life. Apart from her music, she is an ardent
lover of literature, poetry. This yearning led her to the university degree in English Literature. She had also taken lessons of Bhajan, Thumri from Late Vidhushi Shipra Bose, student of Naina Devi.In the year’2000, Sanghamitra joined the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India,
as an Artist. She came in touch with the famous Kathak Maestros, Pt. Birju Maharaj, Pt. Pratap Pawar, Saswati Sen and is presently working with them. She is associated with a cultural organization namely, “Sangeet Sankalp” and come across through various forms of music through her performances and her involvements. She has performed in the “Sindhu Festival, Ladakh”, “Kavi Upendra
Bhanja Festival”, as an accompanying musician in the “International Dance Festival” organized by the ICCR, “Press Club of India”, ”Ghalib Academy”, ”Ramakrishna Sarada Mission” and Rabindra Sangeet with “Uttarayan” etc and toured all over the country demonstrating her art.
Her presentations in music are Khayal, Thumri, Bhajans, Ghazals,
Geets and Bengali RabindraSangeet, Nazrulgeeti etc. But, the typical style of Patiala Gharana in Khayal singing lies in the core of her heart.
She feels herself blessed to get blessings from great music practitioners of the country namely Girija Devi, Pt. Ajoy Chakraborty, Pt. Birju Maharaj. Reading regularly about Indian (Hindustani and Carnataki) and Western Music is a part of her daily life. She works with innovative ideas in the field be it recording, live performing, or teaching. In the coming days, Sanghamitra focuses on her riyaz(music practice) and aspires to perform in the globe.
Sanghamitra is felicitated by Ex. Supreme court Justice G.N.Ray in a function where she sang Tagore songs and her “TRIBUTE TO TAGORE”. She has the acumen of compering in several events, musical shows and corporate events.
** She has a collection of a variety of song forms and can perform in any event or theme-based function…………. devotional, classical, folk or modern.
