China’s grievances against Australia ‘go to the heart of who we are’

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says China has become increasingly “assertive” after airing 14 grievances against Australia earlier in November.

The Chinese embassy issued a detailed list of 14 complaints against Australia following an extended diplomatic dispute over trade.

Mr Frydenberg said the grievances “go to the heart of who we are: our free press, our parliamentary democracy”.

“Of course, we’ve taken other measures that have been designed to protect the national interest whether that’s around foreign investment or other security matters,” he told Sky News.

“We don’t walk back from that.

“We don’t make apologies for that.”

The treasurer acknowledged while Australia is currenting experiencing a “pretty challenging environment on the trade front,” to some extent the trading relationship with China is “mutually beneficial”.

He pointed to the iron ore industry and services such as tourism and education as being important to China.
