Sooner Australia ends 'abusive relationship' with China the better

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says the sooner Australia ends its “abusive relationship” with China the better.

On Monday, a member of the Chinese foreign ministry published a politically provocative and insulting fake image depicting an Australian soldier holding a knife to the throat of a child.

This also follows a period of trade tensions between the two nations where China placed multiple tariffs on a variety of Australian products.

“We’ll find other markets,” Mr Canavan told Sky News.

“I’ve been saying all year that we need to desperately diversify our trade.

“And get out of this abusive relationship.

“It’s time to unite as a country and knuckle down to the task of finding other partners to deal with, ones that can be trusted.

“And ones that won’t threaten and bully us in this type of way.”
