China says Australia should do some ‘serious thinking’ amid wine tariff effects
A Chinese spokesman has said Australia should do some “serious thinking” about whether it has respected Chinese interests as the effects of major wine tariffs come into full effect.
Substantial new tariffs implemented by China which effectively double or even triple the cost of Australian wine in China have now come into effect, causing Australian wine makers to label the so-called anti-dumping tax a “bullying tactic”.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a media conference, “I think Australia should do some serious thinking; they should think about whether they’ve respected Chinese interests”.
The escalating trade war between Canberra and Beijing is making Australia’s attempts to recover from COVID-19’s economic damage even more difficult, however Prime Minister Scott Morrison remains confident the issue can be overcome.
