Best Science Toys That You Won't Believe They Exist!

Hi Everyone :)
Welcome back!

I get asked often: "Where did you get all this stuff?" My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.

This video contains :

👉 Tornado Spheres: two ball bearings welded together can be made to spin up to 2000+ rpm by the Magnus Effect using a stream of air. Shining three colored LEDs on the spinning pair produces an illusion of floating rings along with a second illusion that these rings are rotating and changing direction due to aliasing with the frame rate of the video camera (like the famous wagon-wheel effect).

👉 Pythagorean Puzzle: a proof, in physical form, of one of the most famous equations concerning the sides of any right triangle.

👉 Magnetic Field Demonstrator: an array of encapsulated iron wire segments allows visualization of magnetic field orientation. Another tool for revealing the invisible components of our universe.

👉 Element Enigma: a handheld study in material density. Each of the six pieces is a different metal and shape, but are cleverly designed and precision machined to have the *exact same volume* of 6 cubic centimeters- allowing for a direct comparison of the contrast in densities of these elemental metals. From lightest to heaviest the puzzle pieces are: magnesium, aluminum, titanium, iron, copper, and tungsten.

👉 Microscope Hologram: My favorite hologram in my collection, and it looks even more stunning in person!

👉 Stirling Engine: low temperature difference engine turns a fraction of the heat of hot tap water into mechanical motion. For this engine the heat source is the hot tap water, and the heat sink is the room temperature air.

👉 Rotational Instability

👉 Spherical Mirror and Pendulum: the curious inverted reflection from a concave spherical mirror. This video was challenging to shoot!

👉 Fiber Optic Galaxy Lamp: a vintage 1970s fiber optic lamp with a chrome “UFO” base. Note the beautiful spherical symmetry of the fiber spray- they don’t make them like this anymore!

👉 Hoberman Orbiter: The motor is programmed to repeatedly spin for 10 seconds and turn off for 5 seconds. The structure expands with the help of the colored masses that provide additional angular momentum and then contracts as friction slows the spin rate.

👉 Praxinoscope

👉 Zoetrope: the physics and psychophysics of motion animation- still images flashed in rapid succession produces the illusion of motion through persistence of vision. The slits are crucial to creating the illusion by blacking out the visual stimulus for a short duration- without these pauses only a blur is perceived. When the image flash rate is above the flicker fusion frequency (approximately 16Hz) we perceive fluid motion- the basis for all movies and TV.

👉 "Swing Thing": folk craft kinetic art from the 1970s- potential energy from wound rubber bands converts to kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy producing curious periodic motion in the pendulum bob at the end of the string.
