MAGICAL SCIENCE TOYS THAT YOU MUST SEE!

Hi Everyone :)
Welcome back!

I get asked often: "Where did you get all this stuff?" My goal is to share the real magic of science and physics- and to this end I will update here (and in my store) suggestions on where to get some of these toys, kinetic art pieces, and scientific curiosities for yourself.

This video contains :

👉 Magnetic Newton's Cradle: the famous collision demonstration reimagined with opposing magnets as the pendulum weights- shown here in two modes of operation. A 1990s desk toy by Fascinations- sadly no longer in production.

👉 Modern LED Newton's Cradle: the classic physics demonstration of conservation of momentum and energy cleverly updated with LEDs and light sensors that synchronize color with changes in motion.

👉 Prisma Clock

👉 Hydro-Gyro: the effect of centripetal acceleration on a liquid. Note how the surface of the water is flat and parallel to the center rotation axis of this spinning gyroscope- a small boat would float on the water with its top pointing towards the center. One way to simulate gravity.

👉 Splat Pig Ball: water filled ball made of an extremely elastic and sticky (tacky) soft polymer. This toy can regain its initial shape after extraordinary deformation- as caught in 240 fps slow motion (see the replay).

👉 Bobile: balance + mobile- all components have a skid resistant rubbery coating which provides for static friction.

👉 Aerolux Neon Glow Bulb: the flower filaments glow with light from the emission spectrum of excited neon. The leaves are coated with green phosphor which is stimulated to emit green light by the ultraviolet (and invisible) emission line photons from the excited neon atoms.

👉 Franklin's Bells: the styrofoam bead is covered in conductive paint allowing transfer of static electric charge from one penny to the other.

👉 Black Hole in a Bottle: this ball bearing has a radius of 0.89 cm- the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole with the exact mass of the Earth and in this case the surface of this marble would represent the event horizon, the distance from the center where the escape velocity equals the speed of light.

👉 Tumble Rings: the links in this chain are connected in a special way such that the top ring appears to tumble to the bottom- a compelling illusion!

👉 Automated Lenticular Display: motion animation lenticular postcard with magnetic pendulum rocking display. The swinging is maintained by a simple magnetic kicking circuit that pushes a magnet in the bottom of the pendulum until the AAA battery runs down in a few weeks.

👉 Magnetic Field of a Cube of Dipoles: making the hidden fields around us visible- the complicated field produced by a cubic array of buckyballs as revealed by Magnaview film.

👉 Gauss Gun: acceleration of steel balls through magnetic potential energy and cascading collisions. Four neodymium magnets provide the potential energy that is converted into significant kinetic energy of the end steel ball. The initial configuration has two steel balls on one side of each magnet- an incoming ball on the opposite side accelerates and impacts each magnet in turn sending each loosely connected second ball off with greater speed.

👉 Thaumatrope: a quick flick puts the rabbit in to  the magician’s hat! Physics and the psychophysics of vision combine to produce the illusion in this wooden version of a toy invented in 1824.

👉 Magnetic Chaotic Pendulum: adding magnetic forces to gravity gives this pendulum chaotic motion- not random, but very different each time it is launched.

👉 Diamagnetic Levitation: a small neodymium magnet is suspended above a plate of diamagnetic pyrolytic graphite.

👉 Ferrofluid Magician: whimsical and wonderful physics toy from Taiwan. With a magnet in his hat (and a dove on his head) this little conjurer embodies our tag line here on physicsfun: "physics describes the real magic of the universe"!
