👉 Wimshurst Electrostatic Generator: this device uses two counter rotating disks of metal pads to separate charge via induction. The repulsion felt by electrons as the triangle plates pass by each other pushes charge to flow across two conducting rods, one on each side, which allows the charge to stack up. This excess charge is then stored in old fashioned cylindrical capacitors (Leyden Jars) until the resulting 30,000+ Volts is achieved to jump the air gap. This device goes back to 1883- invented by James Wimshurst.

👉 Van de Graaff Generator: this miniature electrostatic generator can create potentials of more than 50,000 volts allowing sparks to jump a couple centimeters through dry air. Similar physics to the sparks created when shoes scuff on carpet, a moving rubber dielectric belt carries electrons away from the top sphere leaving it positive charged- as can be seen by the electrostatic repulsion of some Mylar strands. A small battery powered 3V motor drives the belt via the bottom pulley in this unit that costs less than $10 US.

👉 Backflipping Wind Up: an energy transfer toy- a wound coil spring transfers and stores energy through a set of gears to a straight spring which is suddenly released to create kinetic energy which is then converted to gravitational potential energy- sending the toy air bound into a back flip.

👉 Magnetic Chaotic Pendulum: adding magnetic forces to gravity gives this pendulum chaotic motion- not random, but very sensitive to slight differences in initial launch conditions.

👉 Nixie Tube: long before there were 7 segment LED displays there was the Nixie- cold cathode tubes with a wire mesh and 10 cathodes shaped in the form of numerals 0-9 that illuminate through neon glow discharge. Here 170V DC is connected to each lead in sequence.

👉 Tessellation Origami: nested spirals and triangles created from one flat sheet of paper!

👉 Viscous Flow Resin Lamp: art from mixing high viscosity fluids. Each lamp from EP Designlab captures a unique pattern based on the physics of nondiffusive turbulence resulting from the mixing of viscous fluids- in this case silicone resins. When the resins cure the pattern is captured and frozen in place- and these blocks are ready to display with USB rechargeable LED illumination in the base.

👉 Impossible Bottle Sculpture Puzzle: seemingly impossible, but created with clever engineering, this “impossible” bottle contains a padlock and full deck of cards still in the wrapper (a cut out in the side of the box reveals that all the cards are inside). The puzzle aspect is to consider how the bottle was produced (I personally have some theories- but I do not know the secrets of this artist). I can tell you with high certainty that the bottle was never cut or altered in anyway, and it was not somehow formed around the objects. This bottle by Phil Evans is one of the best I’ve seen.

👉 Double Pendulum Chaos: by @orbdrop - a device to demonstrate the motion of mathematical chaos from a simple assembly of two physical pendulums (one attached to the end of the other). An LED light attached to the end of the pendulum is used to generate light trails captured by the app “Slow Shutter” allowing for a visualization of the chaotic motion.

👉 Coupled Pendulum: kinetic energy transfers between the pendulums in a complicated but cyclic way due only to the connecting string. If the two on the left are set to swing, soon the middle sphere is at rest while the two outside swing, then the one on the far left comes to rest and it starts the pattern over on the right. The pattern repeats until the initial energy is dissipated by friction.

👉 Dither Image Encryption: three images hidden in random dither patterns are revealed by precisely overlaying and aligning any two patterns in the generated set. Amazingly each pattern holds two encrypted images where b+c=♣, a+b=♦, and c+a=♥.

👉 Phasing Disks: the result of constructive and destructive interference of light waves bouncing in between and through acrylic producing light and dark bands of iridescent colors. This kinetic art object allows for compression of the tiny gap between the disks to dynamically shift the interference patterns.
