Khanyisa Runs to Her Herd for a New Day | with Special Setombe & Klaserie Time

Khanyisa is rearing to go and runs out to meet the herd! Watch as the rescued elephants all head out into the beautiful lush wilderness, while Adine shares some insight along the way! We spend some extra time getting to know two elephants: Setombe and Klaserie

A special mother-daughter relationship: Setombe & Klaserie

The oldest of all the elephants, Setombe, has a quiet and sensitive nature. Born in approximately 1985, she is part of the original herd that was rescued from Zimbabwe.

While there is little information about her formative years, it is believed that she may have had some bad experiences in her youth, as she battles to trust, and is often wary and skittish. Setombe could very well have been the Matriarch of the herd, due to her age and body size, but she is a very nervous elephant and is neither a good decision-maker nor a leader.

She is a quiet but also curious elephant and likes to be in-between the herd, especially in the close company of Sebakwe and her daughter, Klaserie, because it makes her feel more protected.

The birth of Klaserie in 2007 was a significant event, as it showed that she had settled down in her new environment. The birth also had a calming effect on her.

Setombe actually once had hierarchy over Somopane, putting her in fourth place in the herd but Somopane claimed the title and has held it among all the elephants for some time.

Named after a river in South Africa that flows past Kapama, Klaserie was born on 23 February 2007, to Setombe. She is the second calf to be born to the Jabulani herd, and came into the world just six months after Limpopo was born.

Klaserie is a very relaxed and easy-going young female elephant, always taking things in her stride. The bond she has with her mother, Setombe, is very special, and no doubt where she gets her soft demeanor from. She is a beautiful part time allomother to Khanyisa too and much more nurturing to other young elephants than her mother is.
