Fantasia by Ralph Vaughan Williams at Gloucester Cathedral

Fantasia on a Theme by Tallis was composed in 1910 by Ralph Vaughan Williams and performed for the first time on September 10 of that year at Gloucester Cathedral. Here a more recent rendition of Williams composition is performed in the acoustic splendour and atmospheric Gothic surroundings of the Cathedral.

Like "The Lark Ascending" Vaughan Williams, if anything else, epitomises essentially that which one instantly recognises as "English".

The Times summed up his legacy as: "Historically his achievement was to cut the bonds that from the times of Handel and Mendelssohn had bound England hand and foot to the Continent. He found in the Elizabethans and folk-song the elements of a native English language that need no longer be spoken with a German accent. And from it he forged his own idiom."

In the words of his biographer, Michael Kennedy, Ralph Vaughan Williams was "that extremely English product - the natural nonconformist with a conservative regard for the best tradition".
