In this channel, we have been talking about hydraulic modelling about how to use software like EPANET and WaterGEMS to design water distribution networks or to design water supply networks but I think there is something that as an engineer I'd like to share with you and that is nothing but the impact of operation and maintenance costs for the engineering projects that we design!

Sometimes as engineers we normally spend a lot of time dealing with calculations or dealing with modelling or designs but we spend little to no time analyzing possible operation and maintenance costs for our projects or our designs.

Let's say for example you are a mechanical engineer or electrical engineer and you have prepared an imposing design or an imposing model for a certain product but somehow during the design process you forgot or you overlook to analyze the possible operation and maintenance costs for that a particular product or design.

And soon after implementation or soon after you ship the product people start to complain that your product consumes a lot of energy to the extent that they cannot afford the operation cost for your product.

Do you know what is going to happen? well, it's very simple your product is going to fail simply because of its high operation and maintenance costs and you're not just that it's going to fail but you are going to end up with loss simply because no one wants to use your product now the question is what if during the design phase engineers or you as an engineer you spend like a few hours or few days to analyze the possible operation and maintenance cost for your product?
