Protecting the puma: Patagonia’s top predator
At Rewilding Chile, legacy of Tompkins Conservation, we have monitored the puma population in Patagonia National Park since 2008. As a top predator, this wild cat activates a chain of ecological processes. It controls the wild herbivore population, and its prey provides food for scavenger species such as the condor and the fox, with 90% of its diet consisting of guanacos.
Because of its ecological role, it is one of the 20 keystone species of large mammals in the world for restoring ecosystems, according to research published in the scientific journal Ecography. By protecting the puma, we are restoring Chilean Patagonia!
