Whip Corals: Animal forests in Patagonia
They are marine animals that live under the ocean along the Route of Parks of Patagonia. When found in abundance, they form whip coral forests, which are a sign of a healthy ecosystem! But these important marine animals have been declared endangered in coastal waters by the Chilean Ministry of Environment. They have been negatively impacted by aquaculture concessions like salmon farming along the Patagonia coast, which increase sedimentation and decrease the amount of oxygen in ocean waters.
Rewilding Chile has been exploring the Patagonia sea, learning of its incredible richness and also identifying the main threats to its health and biodiversity. We have found several areas where these whip corals thrive. We need to all work together to protect these spectacular and little known marine ecosystems!
