Cartoon Music Cues | Jack Shaindlin and his Orchestra LANGLOIS FILMUSIC Production Music (1949-1954)

Before Hoyt Curtin came on board the Hanna-Barbera TV cartoon factory team as music director, the cartoon producers would edit up music cues from music production libraries, some of which came from this music composer Jack Shaindlin's collection you may find familiar.

Some of these cues may have been heard in the early Huckleberry Hound, Quick Draw McGraw, and other early H-B TV cartoons, prior to 1960.

[[SPECIAL on END-SCREEN: sound comparison of original mono to re-engineered stereo]]

During the musicians' strike in 1958, Capitol Records' music librarian, John Seely, was credited on-screen for providing many various music cues from the Capitol Hi-Q music library, as well as some portions from the cues in this collection (i.e. "Thoroughfare"), along with 'rival' Hi-Q composers like Robert Sharples, George Hormel, and William "Bill" Loose.

When John Kricfalusi created "Ren & Stimpy" cartoons for Nickelodeon in the 1990s, the exact same 'archival' production music library cues were also used prolifically!

In this re-engineered collection in Dyna-Stereo you'll hear the more thematic and 'catchier' melodies rather than the mostly cartoony underscores:

0:00 - "Crazy Goof" (mono ending cue)
0:07 - "Toboggan Run"
1:15 - "Fun On Ice"
2:52 - "Thoroughfare"
4:22 - "Light 'N Airy"
5:31 - "Motor Boating"
7:32 - "Walking Briskly"
9:57 - "Hardware"

If you were to describe some of this music, it might be called either 'soundtrack' or even 'light music' in the symphonic arena.

As for this small collection of Shaindlin music cues, Langlois Filmusic was an American production music library founded in 1949 by Cy Langlois, Jack Shaindlin, and Robert McBride - and many of the cues were originally recorded on film, then magnetic tape (as the fidelity differences will show) - and this 'mono archival' collection was re-engineered to increase dynamic range, add noise reduction, and add spatial effect - as compared to the originals (currently available with the CINE CDs in the KPM/APM music library (who are the current owners of all copyrights - and any interest in this music should be directed to them.

These selections are sourced from the Internet Archive in mp3 format, and NOT from the APM CINE CDs (which honestly aren't any better).

Langlois Filmusic was one of the first American music libraries. In 1965, Jack Shaindlin, one of the company’s founders, bought the rights to the library and created Cinemusic, which became the new owner of Langlois Filmusic. In the 1980s, Cinemusic was purchased by EMI.

Some songs from Langlois Filmusic were re-released on Cinemusic albums, and are part of the APM (and KPM) music libraries in their archival form.

Jack Shaindlin (April 14, 1909 – September 22, 1978) was a Russian-American musician, composer, arranger, conductor, and music director. He was the musical director for The March of Time newsreel series.

Shaindlin was born in Karasubazar, Crimea, Russian Empire on April 14, 1909 to Chaim and Rachel (Golden). His father owned and operated a coal business and was possibly shot and killed during a robbery of his business. Shaindlin came to North America, via Istanbul, on December 8, 1922 and entered the U.S. under the name Jacob Scheindlin. Shaindlin began his musical career as a pianist in silent movie halls, having relocated to the United States as a young boy (Chicago) along with his mother and brother Leo by winning a music scholarship/piano competition in Russia. He became a naturalized US citizen July 28, 1934.

In the late 1940s he was the musical director of the Carnegie Pops Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. He was cited by President Truman for his war contributions for his work on the documentary Tanks.

He was the founder and President of Triumph Publications, Inc. of New York City, an extensive and progressive commercial sound music recording library with affiliation to BMI. He scored numerous television and cartoon music, including such classic favorites as Deputy Dawg, Rocky and Bulwinkle, Father Knows Best, and The Cisco Kid. He also composed the 1951 fanfare for Screen Gems used from 1951.

He was the Musical Director of the Arthur Penn feature film Mickey One, starring Warren Beatty and with musical features by saxophonist Stan Getz. Shaindlin also directed a number of significant documentaries, ranging in scope from travel themes to education, health, and Hollywood. Their offices were located in New York City on West 60th Street between Columbus Circle and Eighth Avenue. Upon formal retirement in the early 1970s, he became a musical consultant to Madison Square Garden.

Modern-day game aficionados know Jack Shaindlin's music from the song made famous in Fallout 3: "I'm Tickled Pink"
