CNBC TV studios last days in Fort Lee, New Jersey (2003) - Vintage TV studio technical operations

Take a nostalgic trip back in time to 2003 - and enjoy a rare photographic journey through the original studios, offices, editing rooms, and other technical operations of CNBC Television then located in the original studio facilities in Fort Lee, NJ - then owned by GE, later partnering with VivendiUniversal - under the NBC Cable Networks group.

It was a time when the financial news network, then using the tagline "Make It Your Business", was transitioning with the NYSE from fractions (as seen on the studio ticker crawl) to decimals (as seen on the first and groundbreaking studio flat-screen TV wall - which immediately modernized the on-air look when then-newly installed).

It was a transitioning time when analog broadcast technology was extraordinarily expensive and bulky, and you were truly a broadcast engineer to operate these machines and synchronize them - and physically deliver your work.

For the 5 years prior to the move to the new Global Headquarters, the broadcast equipment, and tape sources were slowly transitioning from analog to digital - still in "SD" Standard Definition.

Windows-based computers didn't appear until the late 1990s, with all newsgathering, scriptwriting and 'top lines' messaging being done originally on old green-screen dot matrix monitors.

The physical machinations everyone - from producers to editors to 'video playback' and dubbing - had to make - twirling dials and pushing buttons and pushing levers - popping tapes in and out of VTRs (tape machines) and their handwritten-labeled boxes - has evolved into the current modern way of production - however, today it is 4K or HD - and can be done anywhere...

Changing tape formats (from Panasonic MII with infamous 'dropouts' - and transitioning to digital Panasonic DVC Pro) and the workflows - and the storage considerations needed for them are evident in all the photos.

And yes, there were many then-Apple Macinotsh-based Avid Media Composer 'non-linear editing' NLE rooms at Fort Lee even then, not included in this video - as much of that technical equipment had already been moved to the network's new state-of-the-art facility by the time these photographs were taken.

It truly was a hub of action - and to all that had a chance to work there, it was a second home with a second family.

And it was a time of transition - and tremendous growth to come.

Today, CNBC Television's main production studios and offices are located a few miles north of this old location in their custom-built CNBC Global Headquarters in Englewood Cliffs.

20 years later in 2023, CNBC has become a powerhouse in business news on all platforms. And also 'streams' - something never even considered in 2003.

CNBC is part of the NBCUniversal News Group division of Comcast NBCUniversal.

This video is not monetized and all money earned goes to Paul Anka (81 years old in 2023) !!!

Song: "The Times Of Your Life"

PS The video creator used to perform in a wedding band 'through the years' of 1989-1999, and performed Anka's song too often as a first dance - and was the worst song to perform live due to the strange and horrible key changes that would always trip up the band! ENJOY!
