Complete 10in Skoolie Roof Raise on Bus Conversion
This was an INSANE project. Just going through the many, MANY clips and reliving the entire process as I put this video together I am honestly AMAZED at Miles, who quite literally did a majority of this job all by himself.
We always thought a Skoolie with a roof raise was something we would do longer down the road, but when this bus fell into our laps it just felt right, and with Miles being 6' 2" a roof raise had to be done for him to be comfortable in this bus.
After lots of back and forth, we finally decided to do an under-the-window raise and only delete the front 3 windows and back 2 windows on one side of the bus. The back two windows are where our headboard will be, and the front three are where the fridge and bathroom will end up being. I wanted to keep as many original skoolie windows as possible. Note that since we did do an under-the-window raise instead of deleting all the windows and adding new ones, the job was a bit more difficult than the average roof raise where you see them do the lift above the window and delete all the windows.
We managed to save a ton of money doing this ourselves. Shout out to Skoolie.com who let us try out their first-ever Skoolie Roof Raise Kit that came with all the specialty items and odds and ends we would need to do this roof raise. If you are planning on doing a roof raise, custom window deletes, or really anything that requires customization on your build - Skoolie.com is the place to go, plus be sure to use the code MilesAndLala for 5% off!
The kit included much of what we would need, with the exception of the actual sheet metal which we purchased from OnlineMetals.com, pre-cut to the sizes we would need, and the many power tools required for this job.
As you'll see in the video, Miles is not a welder, and we didn't want to have to pay for a welder to come out twice for this project, so Miles prepped everything for Dustin at FloFab Welding and he and his partner came out and crushed welding all the hat channel extensions (included in the kit) in one day!
We tried to make this video as educational as possible, and we are absolutely happy to answer any questions about the process. This project took about 3-4 weeks (I am sure it would be faster with two or more sets of hands, and we also had some delays in shipping on a few items.) Despite that it was a BIG job, we are so happy to have the extra 10 inches of head space. It really makes the bus feel so much larger, but not so tall that it's awkward.
If you have any questions, drop a comment or hit us up on Instagram at @MilesAndLala. This project, from the prepping and doing, to the recording and editing, took a lot of time but we look forward to catching you all up on other projects we've been working on and how tent life is going soon!
*We're expecting the rainy season to start in a week and the weather is starting to cool down so we're preparing to have to be uncomfortable for a few weeks until we can get the bus painted, resealed, and insulated.
