Historically, the UK's political structure has evolved through significant events and reforms.

The Acts of Union in 1707 joined England and Scotland, and in 1801, Ireland joined to form the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. However, in 1922, predominantly Catholic parts of Ireland left the UK, leaving only Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom.

The political landscape of the UK has been shaped by various factors, including the impact of the British Empire, the influence of political parties, and the role of the monarchy. The monarchy's role has evolved from a position of direct political influence to a largely ceremonial one, with the monarch now playing a role in appointing the Prime Minister who commands the confidence of the House of Commons.

The UK's political history also reflects the influence of social and economic changes, such as industrialization and urbanization, which have challenged traditional political structures and created new social problems.

These changes have led to the emergence of new political movements and the expansion of political participation, including the struggle for religious liberty and the fight for voting rights for men and women.

In recent years, British political history has faced challenges in maintaining relevance and accessibility, as academic history has retreated from the study of political institutions and formal power structures.

However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of changing the political landscape that best reflects the common layperson, rather than corporate interests that has bludgeoned the political system over the interests of the common people.

Currently, in 2025, the House of Commons does not represent the common class of residents that it was originally established to do.
