SUPERCUB: First oil change at 300 miles, GoldPlug MP-01

The Super Cub gets its first (early) oil change today at ~300 miles. Skip to the end of the description for clickable time markers.

These small Honda engines don't have oil filters (although this one has a centrifugal spinner to separate particulates), and they don't have very much capacity (0.8qt), so the oil becomes contaminated fairly quickly. I like to change the oil early during break-in and then again every 1500-2000 miles thereafter. The oil was getting dark and had some solid contaminants in it, but it seemed to be in good condition overall.

I installed a GoldPlug magnetic drain bolt (MP-01) while I was in there, so we'll see if it catches anything in the sump. There is a screen above the plug, so some of the larger particulates will likely be above that screen and taken into the oil spinner housing instead.

The next service will be done by the dealer at ~600 miles, so I won't be able to inspect the magnet on the end of the plug during that maintenance. All of the subsequent changes will be done at home, so I'll keep tabs on how effective the GoldPlug is in the Cub's sump (below the screen). The GP tends to catch lots of fine, ferrous sludge in all of my other bikes, so I know they are helping to keep those abrasive particulates out of my oil.

Time indexes:
0:00 : Background on my reasons for the early oil change
3:35 : Oil drain bolt location... don't mess with the second bolt, that's the cam chain tensioner
5:15 : Draining the oil... the color is dark, but not too bad
5:42 : Servicing the Cub is really easy, plenty of ground clearance and access to the bottom of the motor
6:30 : Comparing the seated lengths of the OEM drain bolt vs. the GoldPlug MP-01's specs... MP-01 is about 1/16" (~1.3mm) longer than OEM
8:40 : Checking drain bolt clearance with a soda straw depth gauge, no clearance issues... about 1/8" (~3.2mm clearance)
10:59 : Torquing down the new drain bolt to 18 ft-lb
12:59 : Refilling the crankcase with 0.8qt of Honda GN4 10W-30 oil
16:40 : Verifying the oil level with the sight glass on the crankcase
16:55 : Brief crankcase overfill discussion
18:02 : Inspecting and lubricating the drive chain
18:40 : Notice some scuffing on the side cover from my boot
20:45 : The master link appears to be painted/sealed in place
22:30 : Inspecting the oil for debris and other contaminants
25:55 : GoldPlug discussion... two-thumbs-up recommendation! 👍👍
