STORYLINE:

Japan’s prime minister boarded a Philippine coast guard ship on Saturday, which has come under harassment by China’s vessel while patrolling the disputed South China Sea, and praised the Japanese-built vessel’s role in helping safeguard the rule of law and freedom of navigation in the region.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s symbolic visit to the BRP Teresa Magbanua, which was docked at the Manila harbor, capped his two-day visit to Manila, where he held talks with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday to strengthen defense ties amid their countries’ shared concern over China’s increasing assertiveness in the region.

Japan has provided a dozen patrol ships to the Philippines in recent years, including the 97-meter (318-foot) -long Magbanua. Manila’s coast guard largely uses the ships for sovereignty patrols and to transport supplies and fresh batch of navy and marine personnel to nine Philippine-occupied island, islets and reefs in the strategic waterway.

That has put the Philippine ships on a collision course with the much larger fleets of China’s coast guard and navy.
