"We planted the bulbs of these tulips in December. And in fact, it is such a miracle that in the spring they blossomed, as symbols of life, and in this space - the Heavenly Hundred Memorial - it is extremely symbolic."

"War is polarizing. It polarizes the world into completely opposite poles: life and death, one's own - another's, safety - danger, those who left - those who remained. And in order to move from these poles to a healthy middle, the pole of death must be balanced by the pole of life. And that's why flowers are a symbol of life. A symbol that it continues, that it is beautiful."

"It's such a joy, it's... I'm going to cry now... Let someone forget about the war even for a moment. Let someone forget for a second that they are bombing our Ukraine, and let someone think for a second that when their husbands return, they will plant flowers together in their garden. We're endlessly grateful."

Flower therapy is flourishing in Lviv, after the Netherlands gifted the Ukrainian city 100,000 tulip bulbs.
The bulbs, which were planted in December 2023, have now blossomed and the local council is hoping the flowers will be a comfort to residents coping with the continuing war.
STORYLINE:
A beautiful sight in a city struggling with the effects of over two years of war.
In the Ukrainian city of Lviv, 100,000 tulip bulbs gifted by the Netherlands last year have now blossomed, giving residents a much needed distraction.
Many of the tulips were planted next to city landmarks, such as the Heavenly Hundred Memorial - a place of honour for those who died during the Revolution of Dignity in 2014.
"We planted the bulbs of these tulips in December. And in fact, it is such a miracle that in the spring they blossomed, as symbols of life, and in this space - the Heavenly Hundred Memorial - it is extremely symbolic," says Oksana Lutsko, deputy head of the ecology department of the Lviv City Council.
The local authority has created an interactive map marking the locations of the tulips.
15 varieties of tulips in different colours were selected for each location.
