Inspection Of Life Jackets

All passengers on the Titanic were given life jackets. Canvas and cork were used to make these life vests. They were flimsy in design and were only held together by fabric strings. As the Titanic sank, many of the passengers who were unable to board lifeboats jumped from the ship's railings or sides. Many jumpers were knocked unconscious by their life vests due to the vest design. In the freezing waters, many people drowned, broke their necks, or died of hypothermia. Cork remained the primary material for life vests after the disaster, and they were not redesigned until after WWII. The loss of passengers wearing cork life vests on the Titanic, as well as other similar incidents, prompted an improvement in the materials used.

Lifeboats

The number of lifeboats on the Titanic was determined by the ship's tonnage as determined by the Board of Trade. Titanic was only required to have 16 lifeboats under this rule, but she actually had 20. Even so, the boats couldn't accommodate half of their passengers and crew. The number of lifeboats on a vessel is now determined by the number of people on board.
