Big Loss! We JUST LOST 'The Last Mosquito-Free Country' On Earth - Iceland #shorts

For the first time in recorded history, mosquitoes have been found in Iceland, a country that was long known as one of the few places on Earth without these insects. Scientists and local observers confirmed that three mosquitoes of a cold-tolerant species were discovered near the capital Reykjavik. This marks a notable change because Iceland’s harsh, cold climate used to keep mosquitoes away almost entirely.

Experts believe the appearance of mosquitoes may be linked to rising temperatures and record heat in the region. Iceland has experienced unusually warm weather in recent months, including record high temperatures around Christmas, and changes like melting glaciers are becoming more common. This warmer environment makes it easier for insects that once couldn’t survive there to live and possibly reproduce.

Scientists are still studying whether these mosquitoes will be able to survive through the winter and establish a permanent population. Some cold-adapted mosquito species can endure winter conditions by finding sheltered places to stay, but it’s too early to say if Iceland will soon have established mosquito populations.

Although the species found so far aren’t known to carry serious diseases in Iceland, their arrival is seen as a sign of how climate change is affecting ecosystems. A place once almost completely free of mosquitoes may now be on its way to joining most of the rest of the world where these insects live.
