“Doctor Attacked Inside Hospital”: BRIMS Resident Suffers Fracture After Mob Assault in Bidar
A 28-year-old doctor was brutally assaulted inside the casualty ward of Bidar District Government Hospital (BRIMS) in Karnataka, allegedly by relatives of a patient, triggering outrage among medical professionals.
The incident took place around 12:30 am when Dr. Tukaram, an Orthopaedics postgraduate resident, was on duty in the emergency ward.
According to the police complaint, the doctor was attending to a patient identified as Vijayasingh, who had reportedly sustained injuries after falling from a motorcycle.
A group claiming to be the patient’s relatives allegedly entered the ward and accused the doctor of not providing proper treatment. The confrontation soon escalated into violence, with the accused allegedly abusing the doctor, issuing death threats, and preventing him from treating other patients.
The attackers allegedly grabbed Dr. Tukaram, pushed him to the ground, and repeatedly punched and kicked him inside the casualty ward.
In his complaint, the doctor described the assault as an “attempt to murder.”
Hospital staff rushed to the spot and rescued the injured doctor, who sustained serious injuries, including a maxillary fracture. He is currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
According to preliminary information, the violence may also have been linked to a dispute over registration of a medico-legal case (MLC). Sources said the youths allegedly insisted that hospital authorities should not register an MLC after the motorcycle accident.
Confusion reportedly arose after laboratory staff informed the group that an MLC had already been registered, leading to an argument inside the hospital premises. Despite Dr. Tukaram allegedly clarifying that no MLC had been filed at that point, the group allegedly turned violent.
The Karnataka Association of Resident Doctors (KARD) strongly condemned the attack and raised concerns over the safety of healthcare workers in emergency wards and trauma care settings.
The FIR names seven accused — Aditya, Vinod, Govind, Anil, Mahadev, Balaji and Pawan — along with several unidentified individuals.
Police have arrested five persons directly involved in the assault so far. Authorities are also expected to examine CCTV footage and record statements from hospital staff as part of the investigation.
Further investigation is underway.
