Jewellery Store Employee Steals ₹1.66 Crore Gold, Then Gets Betrayed by Her Own Partner in Crime

The Ahmedabad City Crime Branch has arrested a woman employee of a jewellery store for allegedly stealing gold ornaments worth more than ₹1.66 crore from a showroom in the city.

According to officials, the accused, identified as Harshida Rajendrakumar Shetty, 38, allegedly carried out the theft on May 11 at Abhushan Jewellers located inside Gravity Shopping Mall in Ahmedabad’s Nikol area before fleeing the scene.

Following a complaint registered at Nikol Police Station, the Crime Branch formed multiple teams to trace the accused. Investigators reportedly examined nearly 300 CCTV footage clips before tracking down Shetty, a resident of New Naroda.

Police said only a portion of the stolen jewellery worth ₹22.54 lakh has been recovered so far.

During the investigation, officials found that Shetty had allegedly planned the theft along with her accomplice, identified as Mayur Ashokbhai Mali from Vastral. After the theft, the duo reportedly escaped on a motorcycle and travelled through Udaipur and Jaipur before reaching Delhi.

However, police said the plan took a dramatic turn in Delhi when Mali allegedly abandoned Shetty at a hotel and fled with most of the stolen gold ornaments.

Recovered items include a gold bracelet worth ₹9.98 lakh, an eagle-embossed gold ring studded with white stones valued at ₹1.34 lakh, a gold mangalsutra worth ₹7.43 lakh, and a gold chain worth ₹3.62 lakh. Police also recovered a mobile phone from her possession.

The accused has been handed over to Nikol Police Station for further interrogation under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police have launched a search operation to trace the absconding accomplice.
