Dr. Maika's Message: Two can't-miss NEISD events next week

April 21, 2023

There are two important back-to-back District events taking place next week. Both are open to the public and offer insights into your neighborhood schools.

Both events take place Tuesday, and both are at Littleton Gym at Starcrest and Jones-Maltsberger roads.

The first of the two events start at 4:30 p.m. It is the Spring Superintendent’s Awards Ceremony. For more than 30 years, the Superintendent’s Office has honored parents, students, volunteers, employees, and community partners. It is an event at which we recognize the many ways our community pulls together to make this community what it is. Here are a few examples:

Sunset Ridge Church sponsored an ‘Affordable Christmas’ event which provided gifts for dozens of Camelot Elementary School families.

Students at Steubing Ranch Elementary School now can study the life cycle of a butterfly courtesy of a Monarch butterfly enclosure built by volunteers with supplies donated by Home Depot.

And North East ISD Police Officer Leticia Sanchez saved a Harris Middle School student from choking in the cafeteria not too long ago.

These are just a few of the individuals and community partners we will honor next Tuesday, starting at 4:30 p.m.

The second event immediately follows the awards ceremony at 6 p.m. I invite you to attend this event as well. It is the School Finance Community Meeting during which District finance staff will outline how your schools are funded and how it affects you and your property taxes. Staff will also explain how the county appraises your property and sets your property value – school districts DO NOT have that responsibility.

The finance community meeting will be a refresher for many of you who attend our budget study sessions coming up later this Spring and early Summer.

We are five weeks away from the end of the traditional school year. And as we approach the last day of school, I would like to remind each of you and your children that our District’s tipline is available day or night. If you or your child overhear a potential threat or read of one online, please report it anonymously to the tipline (neisd.net/tipline). When making a report, please include as many details as possible so that we can investigate it thoroughly.

If you would like to revisit any of my previous messages, you can find them archived on the Superintendent webpage (neisd.net/superintendent).

Thank you for watching. I’ll see you around our District.
