STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people gathered for a rally in Romania’s capital on Saturday to pledge support to those living in the Gaza Strip, which is under heavy bombardment by Israeli forces in its war against Hamas.
Held in central Bucharest and organized by the Association of the Palestinian Community in Romania, many of the attendees waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as: “Save the children from Gaza” and “Palestine will be free.”
The association wrote on its Facebook page that it called on Israel’s army to stop bombing Gaza and to withdraw from the area, to lift what it described as an “illegal blockade” and to recognize the “right of the Palestinian people to exist and the State of Palestine.”
“We cannot just stay at home and look at these killings — women and children,” said Badreddin el Moallem, an architecture student from Lebanon. “It’s important just to raise our voice — and hopefully someone will hear us.”
Motaz Alnawati, a 29-year-old engineering student from Gaza, said it was important to attend the rally to raise awareness for Palestinians to highlight the “massacres they are subjected to.”
“When I started seeing the footage from our (family’s) neighbourhood, I really felt like 23 years … were erased from my memory,” he said. “The neighbourhood where we grew up is now destroyed.”
The Palestinian death toll in the Israel-Hamas war has reached 9,448, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.
In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.
The UNRWA says 72 of its staff members have been killed.
More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that started the fighting, and 242 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.
Roughly 1,100 people have left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing since Wednesday under an apparent agreement among the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas.
