Food Judge: How to Choose Nondairy or Alt Milks That Are Healthy

Which brands are metabolically healthy and which are not?

Nondairy or alt milks can be loaded with added sugar, processed carbs, processed seed and vegetable oils, and thickening agents (like carrageenan)—all of which affect metabolic health.

For example, Oatly oat milk includes 26 grams of carbohydrates (with 7 grams of added sugar). And one of the ingredients in this brand is rapeseed/canola oil. The processed oats in oat milk can be a sneaky spiker, a food that seems healthy but that often spikes blood sugar.

Look for alt milk options with no added sugar, minimal carbohydrates, and no processed seed or vegetable oils.
