Your ROADBLOCK to Success - Transcending The Upper Limit Problem
There have been many instances where I start to see success in an area of my life and all of a sudden, it all comes falling apart. I was never really conscious of this though nor did I pay much attention to it. I kind of shrugged it off as "it is what it is."
It wasn’t until I started reading a book by Gay Hendricks called The Big Leap. All of a sudden, I had a name for this concept of what I always referred to as “Self Sabotage.” Hendricks calls it The Upper Limit Problem. I really like the fact that he doesn't refer to it as self-sabotage, because that term has such a negative connotation. The upper limit problem makes it sound exactly what it is, there's a limit on how “up” or good we can feel. Unfortunately, for many of us, this has negative impacts on almost every area of your life. it can really hold you back from feeling an abundance of positive energy and emotions in areas like career, purpose, relationships, even in your health.
It all stems back to the programming in our minds that we had downloaded before we were even going to kindergarten. By identifying our upper limit problems, we can stop any negative action on our end when we recognize the only reason that we are about to do something negative is because we feel things are going to good compared to what we are used to. If we don’t catch ourselves doing these things, then our quality of life, expansion, and growth ultimately suffer.
It takes awareness and intentional consciousness to be able to identify when your “upper limit” is coming into play. We are also used to going through our routines and patterns that we can cut off joy and happiness in our lives with the blink of an eye and not even look twice as to what we are doing.
