[BRACES EXPLAINED] Herbst Appliance
Braces Explained: Herbst Appliance
In this video, I will be answer the question of "what is a Herbst Appliance?" and "what are they used for?" The Herbst appliance is a metal tele-/power-scope like appliance that connects your upper and lower jaw and forces you to posture forward. It is an appliance that is categorically a "functional appliance" which connects your upper and lower jaws and forces you to move your lower jaw forward, with hopes to promote growth. Functional appliances, in order to achieve a skeletal change, must be used while you are still growing.
The Herbst Appliance is used to treat a class II (classifications described in a previous video, Braces Explained: Elastics) skeletal malocclusion, when your lower jaw is too far back in relation to your face/upper jaw. If used in adults, the Herbst may help fix your teeth but will not result in a skeletal change. For a skeletal change in adults, an orthognathic jaw surgery will be required.
The Herbst Appliance will be fixed, or cemented in, and will remain in for several months (even up to one year) to allow for it to fully work. It may be uncomfortable at first to speak, eat, or function but rest assure you will get used to it within a few days! Since it will be in your mouth for so long, you must take care of it and be very meticulous with your hygiene routine.
