Questions linger over whether the RBA is ‘truly independent’ from the government
Judo Bank Chief Economic Advisor Warren Hogan says to make sure the Reserve Bank is “truly independent” removing the ability for the Australian Treasurer to veto rate decisions is the “ultimate” check and balance for the RBA.
“These emergency powers, which they have at the moment but which the RBA review suggests they should be removed,” said.
“To make sure the RBA is truly independent.
“This is the whole argument, is the RBA independent of the government?
“A democracy survives on checks and balances, and this is the ultimate check for the RBA.”
