I spent the night in a glamping pod at Wee Hoose Glamping close to the town of Bettyhill - a quiet countryside retreat just off the North Coast 500. Take a tour of my glamping pod and see what it’s like to stay for the night – it’s all part of the Highland experience. Solo travel during the pandemic can be a bit of a challenge but don’t let that put you off - as long as the tourist industry is open and the local laws allow travel then it can be a very rewarding experience, not to mention quiet!

After breakfast I headed out onto some of Scotland’s narrowest single track roads passing the River Naver, Loch Naver and a collage of beautiful landscapes as beautiful as anything you’ll see in Northern Scotland. I found beauty in the mesmerising emptiness, the barren desolate terrain and the feeling of remoteness. There is something very calming about being alone in the middle of nowhere, as this road trip in the Highlands will testify.

The drive took me past Strathmore, a place infamous for the Highland Clearances, and an Iron Age structure overlooking the Strathmore River named Broch Dun Dornaigil. The bumpy winding road made the journey difficult in places but it was worth all the effort.

Another incredible day of travelling in Scotland ended with a quick room tour at my accommodation for the night – the Ben Loyal Hotel in Tongue. Loads more to come from the NC 500.
