Churchill War Rooms | Imperial War Museum London
A tour of Churchill War Rooms during a day in Westminster London - the place where Churchill directed Britain's World War II efforts against Nazi Germany. Now part of the Imperial War Museum in London.

A fascinating look inside Winston Churchill's top secret World War 2 War Rooms in London, I'd been wanting to do this for some time and with Westminster so quiet I decided that my best chance was upon me. The story of how this top secret cabinet war room came to be is remarkable and fortunate in equal measure.
The history goes that in 1940 British Prime Minister Winston Churchill held his first cabinet meeting in a secret underground location that he referred to as his War Rooms. As world war 2 Nazi bombing campaigns intensified he found himself spending more and more time underground, so much so that he declared it the place from which he would direct the war.
At the time only his inner circle knew this classified nerve centre existed and although he preferred to be above ground the bunker was kitted out with everything a war time Prime Minister needed to direct operations. This included a place to meet his cabinet, communication links through the BBC to the British public, all of his generals and even a covert phone line to the White House in America.
In 1984 the War Rooms were opened to the public for the first time and instantly became a must-visit attraction in London.
Under normal circumstances the formerly secret War Rooms would be packed with people but with very few international tourists in London the place was virtually empty. It was fascinating to see such a historically important place and walk through corridors that would have been completely off limits during the Second World War. The entire bunker has been left as it was when the lights were turned off for the final time in 1945.
After exploring the War Rooms I head out onto the quiet streets of Westminster to do a little bit of sightseeing - seeing the place so empty was sad but hopefully things will get back to normal soon. Churchill War Rooms are definitely worth a visit if you're in London but make sure when tourism resumes you book well in advance - the queue can be a long one!
