Tesla Autobidder Now Remarkably Manages Over 1.2 GWh of Energy Storage

Tesla Autobidder is Tesla's cutting-edge AI software, which manages energy storage projects. It is now so big, that it is managing over 1.2 GWh of energy capacity, according to a Tesla executive.

Tesla Autobidder is described by Senior Vice President of Powertrain and Energy Engineering Drew Baglino as “Autopilot for grid-tied batteries.”

The rather remarkable update was shared on LinkedIn by Rohan Ma, an energy veteran who worked at SolarCity before coming aboard Tesla in February 2017 as part of its Energy Products Optimization team. While sharing recent reports about a massive battery project in Angleton, Texas, Ma noted that the Autobidder portfolio is operating over 1.2 GWh in 2021.

Here is what Ma wrote on Twitter. “With the Autobidder portfolio operating over 1.2 GWh in 2021, we're pumped to be launching in Texas this summer. Always interested to connect with people who have experience in ERCOT.” Then he shared a link to Bloomberg, which discusses Tesla’s secretive Megapack project, which I covered a few days ago and will have the link in the description of this video.

I have already reported there that Tesla's Angleton battery would also be using Autobidder.

About a week ago we learned that according to Bloomberg, Tesla has bought a project from storage developer Plus Power in Texas - and is building a 100-megawatt battery storage facility in Angleton.

Originally, the Gambit Energy Storage Park was a project by the energy storage developer Plus Power, which employs numerous former Tesla employees such as Molly Emerson or Bob Rudd . Documents from the City of Angleton indicate that Plus Power wanted to use Tesla storage systems to build a 100-megawatt storage facility.

On the pictures that Bloomberg took of the secret project, 20 battery storage systems can be seen - these could be Tesla's megapacks. A lot of equipment can still be seen around it - but the project seems to be very advanced.

The large battery storage will be connected to the grid of the transmission system operator ERCOT by June 1st - the same power grid that was last badly affected by the winter problems. ERCOT is one of nine independent transmission system operators in North America. The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (non-profit) is responsible for one of the three interconnected networks in the USA, Texas Interconnection.

The battery system has an important function: the black start capability - if the power grid fails, it can help it to restart more quickly. In general, the energy stored there is about enough to supply 20,000 households with electricity - the main goal, however, should be to compensate for grid fluctuations and thus also generate income for the city - property tax should, as Plus Power promised, within ten years be a million dollars.
