Giselle: Belle of the Ballet

Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of the English National Ballet, presents this BBC ballet documentary on Giselle. It includes both an historic viewpoint on the 150 year old classical ballet, together with a modern interpretation choreographed by Akram Khan.

Both stories involve naivete, betrayal, thwarted revenge and ultimately forgiveness. Both Rojo and Khan articulate the karma behind the story, whereby the betrayer starts out as manipulative and cunning but ultimately falls in love with Giselle's gentle and uncorrupted character.

And so, even though Giselle ultimately dies, she perhaps still retains control, for she never leaves the mind of the betrayer. And so Albrecht is left alone to ponder his betrayal and ultimately his loss.
