Let’s Save the Energy Transition - It’s in Danger! (20 IESE Energy)

The 20 IESE Energy Meeting prompted a question to all its participants: is the energy transition in danger?

Rafael Mateo, CEO of Acciona Energía, is confident that the transition is in no danger. And that the risk of not completing it actually falls on not doing it at the necessary speed or in the required order.

Rodrigo Costa, Chairman and CEO of Redes Energéticas Nacionais (REN), points out an unprecedented situation in the energy sector: the lack of capacity to respond to the forecasted demand, with bureaucracy delaying renewable projects up to seven years until completion when they could be done in less than two years.

Oliverio Álvarez, Managing Partner for Energy and Resources at Deloitte Spain and Coorganizer of the Meeting, warned the audience that there is a race between economic blocks to attract the industrial chains for the energy transition enabling technologies.

Pedro Linares, Professor at ETS-ICAI of Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, pointed out that the United States, with its IRA program, is currently leading the pack with its decision to focus on funding the production of components needed for decarbonization.

During the Meeting, Teresa Ribera, Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge and Deputy Prime Minister for Spain, also discussed market regulation, pointing out that the market structure designed 25 years ago might not be suitable for the next 25 years.
Loreto Ordóñez, CEO of Engie España, questioned the audience whether we should say that the price signal was not working at the end of 2022 when it reached the highest historical price in the series, or whether it didn't work in 2020 when it reached its lowest.

José Casas, Executive Vice President of Institutional Affairs and Regulatory Iberia at Endesa, highlighted the importance of having short- and long-term signals because the short-term pressure will enable the development of electrification.
