1978 Honda ATC 90 Full Restoration - Part 7
Welcome to episode 7. This episode focuses on the restoration and rebuild of the carburetor, rear axle carrier and wheels and tyres, i was also going to build a new wiring loom but that didn't pan out as you'll see in the video.
So first thing is first cleaning the dirtiest parts in preparation for the teardown these parts were the carb and axle carrier, so off to the parts washer we went for a quick scrub with de-greaser. Once dried the parts were brought back into the restoration area.
i sat the carrier aside and got to work on stripping the carb, This is a fairly simple process as you can see in the video. The only surprise at this stage was the amount of crud that had accumulated in the fuel filter.
Once fully stripped i loaded the parts of the carb into my new ultrasonic cleaner and let it do its thing. While that was cleaning i made a start on the rear axle bearing carrier. So i clamped it into the vice and pulled the bearings with my internal bearing puller set and then sandblasted the casing to remove all the staining i also blasted the intake tube at this point aswell.
once blasted i fired up the pillar drill with a wire wheel attachment and set about polishing the aluminium back to a shiny finish. By the time i had done that the ultrasonic cleaner had done its job and the carb was spotless clean and ready to be rebuilt with all new jets, seals and washers. Again a pretty simple job and just the reverse of disassembly.
I then made a start on the the wheels as they are very crusty and horrible as you'd expect from a 1978 Honda thats been unloved most of its days. So first thing is first the valve was pulled from the air tube, the nuts were broken loose with the impact gun and the tyre machine was used to break the bead and the two rims came free.
With the wheel assembly broken down i could sand blast the rim halves, prime, paint and clear coat them back to almost factory fresh.
Then it was simply a case of re-assembly.
I hope you will all join me again soon and I also hope you enjoyed the video
Stay Tuned and i will see you all again soon.
