"A Land of My Own" - The Story of Tibi (Ze'ev) Ram
Tibi Ram was born in 1930 in Munkacs, in Subcarpathian Rus', Czechoslovakia, to a Hungarian nationalist family. Ram was thirteen years old when the Germans invaded Hungary. Tibi and his family were sent to Auschwitz, where he was separated from his mother and remained with his older brother and father. He was later taken to Silesia, where he was forced to work paving roads for a further nine months, after which he took part in a death march to Bergen Belsen. After the war, Tibi immigrated to pre-State Israel. He enlisted in the army, and has taken part in all of Israel's wars, finally discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He now lives in the Afikim kibbutz, devoting his time to delivering testimony about his youth to Israeli soldiers, educators and visitors at Yad Vashem.
