Eikev - Laibl's Weekly Parsha Video
Eikev (Sat. 31st July /22nd Av)
Miracles Follow Those Who Try
Laibl's Weekly Parsha Video
The failure of the mission by the twelve spies is a mystery. How could they lose faith in G-d? But they didn’t. They simply mistook a well-known teaching not to rely on miracles, and therefore did not anticipate one. This teaches us that once we undertake challenges with our natural abilities, we create the opportunity for miracles to occur.
Notes:
• This week’s Torah reading has a very humble name, ‘Eikev’ which literally means: the heel of the foot, the lowest part of the body. Rashi takes the literal meaning and plays with it, explaining that the heel, the lowest, refers to the seemingly least important Jewish laws we need to follow, asking who are we to distinguish the less and more important laws and practices
• The Rebbe takes it a step further and notes that if we are sensitive to all aspects of Judaism, even the seemingly minor injunctions, then we will begin to actually hear the footsteps, the heels, of Moshiach.
• A retranslation of the first verse now becomes: “Let your practice of minor laws become the medium for you to hear the footsteps…”
• Who are we to arbitrate what is truly important in Jewish practice or unimportant? Are Culinary Jews who love their gefilte fish and cholent the significant traditionalist Jews? Or are the Cerebral Jews, the Jewish literati who attend all book clubs on the latest Jewish novel, our source of Jewish continuity? Or are Cardiac Jews our saviours, with emotional outpouring of feelings of pride of belonging to the Jewish nation even while they observe nothing Jewish in their lives.
• Moshiach will arrive when we stop choosing between the seemingly important Jewish teachings and the seemingly lesser-status practices, and do all of them equally. Then we will truly hear the footsteps.
