Vayishlach (Shabbat-Sat. 24th November/16th Kislev)
And Where Are You Up To?
Notes: This week’s Parsha, VaYishlach, begins with Yaakov sending a peace delegation to his brother Eisav whom he fears is seeking to wage war against him. He provides the delegation members with very specific instructions, and then lets them to carry these out through their own initiative.
• Likewise, G-d sends each of us out into the world as a delegation to make peace with our planet, with our society, with each other, rather than to entertain a battle of contradiction. G-d too provides us with specific instructions. In the case of the Jewish people the instruction manual is the Torah. In the case of the other 70 soul nations, it is the compilation of the Seven Noachide Laws and their derivative systems.
• Sometimes we need to make a reckoning of where we are up to in our earthly mission. Not unlike when Adam is asked by G-d “Where are you” when Adam hid after eating of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. G-d knew full well where Adam was hiding, but the lesson is that each of us needs to ask ourselves at times “Where are you?” – where are you up to in the mission that has been assigned to you on earth?
• Now might be a timely moment, before the Rosh HaShanna of Hassidim, viz. Yud Tes Kislev, the date when the Alter Rebbe, founder of Chabad, was freed from Czarist prison, to ask yourself the same question: Where are you up to in life?
